So you want a premium car but don't fancy the usual German offerings? The look no further than Volvo. Known for producing incredibly safe cars (they even pioneered the 3-point seatbelt), Volvo cars are stylish yet understated. Most models pack in a lot of kit compared to their rivals, often for a lower price. The smallest car in the range is the executive hatchback Volvo V40 which looks great and handles well. Coming in either estate or saloon guise, the Volvo V60 (or S60) is a capable all-rounder and most models undercut similar cars on offer from Audi and BMW, such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, on price. Volvo's XC60 is starting to feel its age but still delivers a viable alternative to a BMW X3 or Audi Q5. For quite a bit more space (and money) the Volvo XC90 is a class-leader and scores exceptionally highly with the motoring press in all aspects.
